Once again this year, MXD are inviting several key international industry professionals to attend SPOT Festival. All of them will be joining us at the MXD Superball @ RADAR as part of the SPOT+ programme, but until the festival kicks off on May 4th, we will be bringing you brief introductions to them, including where they come from, what companies they work for, what bands they want to check out at Spot, and much more. We look forward to seeing Adam Nealon of Secretly Group.
Name: Adam Nealon
Company: Secretly Group
Title: A&R
Based in: London
Can you tell us a bit about the company’s history and roster?
The Secretly Group started in the mid 90s as just one label, Secretly Canadian, by the Swanson brothers, Ben and Chris, in Bloomington, Indiana. They soon joined forces with Jagjaguwar and Dead Oceans to form the Secretly Group. Across the 3 labels, notable artists are, or have been: Bon Iver, The War on Drugs, ANOHNI/Anthony & The Johnsons, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Tallest Man on Earth and all things Jason Molina related. The group also owns a publishing company, management company, distribution and the incredible Numero reissues label.
– and a bit about the acts you personally work with at this moment?
I’ve been involved in the signing of Makeness, an incredible producer from Scotland and very recent signing, Shame, who are a South London post-punk band from Brixton with a monstrous live show.
What was the moment you decided you wanted to work with music?
I actually wanted to be a film music composer when I was growing up. I studied music at university, but I had a bit of an epiphany when I realised I despised my own compositions too much to want to be the “artist”, and gained far more enjoyment from nurturing those, who really were meant to create great music.
What are your favorite Danish acts?
I really love Trentemøller and Efterklang.
Best show live show ever, hands down?
Not sure about best ever, but most memorable was probably seeing Philip Glass perform with his ensemble. I was very impressionable at the time and I couldn’t get over it.
